How to Slow Down & Be Happier

It’s safe to say that life has never been faster. We’re working hard, playing harder, and demanding instant gratification. All while attached to our smartphones!

But on the flip side, many people are realising the benefits of slowing down. Of living a simpler and less stressful life. Intrigued? Read on to discover how to slow down and do less, while getting much more out of life.

Make things

Whether it’s growing your own vegetables, taking a pottery class, or writing a poem, there is something about creating that feeds the soul. Plus, there is nothing quite as satisfying as slicing into a tomato from your very own garden!

Stop saying yes to everything

If there’s one thing you do for yourself this year, make it learning to say no. It’s not about being rude or inconsiderate, it’s about setting boundaries and taking care of your own needs. It’ll carve you back some precious hours, plus a whole heap of headspace. 

Sit down to eat

Remember that tomato you grew? Don’t eat it while running out the door! Make an effort to sit down and really savor your food. Chew slowly, and enjoy the tastes, textures, smells and colors. Not only will meals become more enjoyable, mindful eating can help you slim down as you learn to read your body better.

Quit multitasking

The jury is out: multitasking makes life harder, not easier! Instead of doing three things at once, poorly, focus on one task and do it properly. And set aside specific blocks through the day to answer emails, rather than responding instantly. Why? It can take up to 20 minutes to regain focus after an interruption!

There is a minimalism movement right now, with people happily ditching their mountains of ‘stuff’ to live a freer life. It’s the experiences you have that matter, not the things you own! Call a friend you’ve lost touch with

Instead of texting back and forth and giving yourself a thumb injury, why not pick up the phone and have an old-school conversation? There is so much you can pick up from the tone of someone’s voice that you just don’t get in a text.

Take technology time-outs

Then once you’ve hung up, consider turning off the phone. Telepressure refers to an obsession with constantly checking and responding to messages and emails – and it’s a real issue of the modern age, with negative health consequences. Why not give yourself a day off from your devices each week to recharge your batteries?

Late night scrolling can also mess with your sleep, so at the very least turn off all tech an hour or more before bed! 

Go for a walk

Meditation is a popular mindfulness practice, but being in nature is also great. Take some time every day to go for a walk. Take your headphones out, breathe in the fresh air, and stop and smell the roses!

Drink tea 

Enjoy a cuppa and some ‘me time’. (credit: @franceduque)

Set aside 15 minutes of ‘me time’ each day, and create your own slow living ritual. Sip on a refreshing herbal tea like SkinnyMint Morning Boost, and read a book, write in your journal, or do nothing at all.
