Is the Keto Diet For You?

Unless you’ve spent the year hiding in a carb-filled cave, you’ve probably heard about the keto diet. Short for ketogenic, the popular low carb-high fat diet is designed to put the body into ketosis, triggering rapid weight loss.

Sounds pretty great, right? But how does it work? And will you feel satisfied? We sat down with Vicky Kuriel, Low Carb High Fat Dietitian and Founder of Eat Play Thrive, to get the skinny on 2017’s hottest diet trend.

It’s time to put fat back on your plate.

“The keto/ketogenic diet is when the specific combination of macronutrients (carbohydrate, protein and fat) has been combined in such a way that allows the individual to enter into a state called nutritional ketosis,” says Vicky. This generally involves majorly slashing your carb intake (sometimes protein is restricted too), and getting the bulk of your calories from fat. Hello, bacon!

Weight loss is just one of the benefits.

You might start the keto diet to help you squeeze into your skinny jeans, but you’ll likely become addicted to the other benefits. “Most people love the keto diet for its rapid weight loss benefits,” says Vicky. However, other longer-term benefits include reduced hunger and improved energy levels!

The keto diet is very low carb.

For most people to reach a state of ketosis, which is essentially fat-burning mode, carbohydrate needs to be limited to less than 50g per day. “To put this into perspective,” says Vicky, “a medium sized banana would give you 20g of carbohydrate, add 2 slices of bread (32g of carbs) and already you are over your limit for the day.”

But you CAN still eat.

Did you know our Gummies are sugar free?

The off-limits foods include sugar (in any form) and starchy carbs (e.g. bread, pasta, rice). But Vicky says you can pile your plate with good quality fat, like that from olive oil, coconut oil and animal fat, as well as plenty of veggies that grow above ground, like leafy greens.

It could take some time to get used to.

Think about that bikini body!

“It takes a bit of time to adapt to the keto diet,” admits Vicky. “During this adaptation period, many people describe symptoms similar to the flu, i.e. decreased energy, headaches, dizziness. This is often referred to as ‘Keto Flu’. This usually only lasts a few days as your body adapts to a new fuel system. My advice is to hang in there, as it will soon pass.”

The Skinnymint Teatox and Super Fat Burning Gummies support the keto diet in a bunch of ways! Firstly, the Morning Boost Tea is formulated with caffeine and natural, energy-boosting ingredients to help you through those first few tough days, and beyond. The fruity flavour of the tea also helps crush those cravings for off-limits sugar.

Taken with breakfast, or before your AM workout, the Power Up Gummy is sugar-free with a yummy espresso flavor. It’s made with Green Coffee Bean, which has been shown to increase resting metabolic rate, drive weight loss and fat loss, and reduce fat absorption.* Maximising the results of your diet.

And if you’re struggling avoiding your afternoon banana muffin? The pineapple flavored Hunger Buster Gummies will be your new go-to.
