Alternative sports you have to try
Wanted: sporty/adventurous types who are looking to spice up their workouts. Must be open-minded. Gym-junkies need not apply…
Hitting the gym may be great for your abs but all those squats and weights can get a bit monotonous. Add some adventure to your routine and try these alternative sports that are anything but run of the (tread)mill.
Boxing is so hot right now, especially with supermodels like Gigi Hadid, Gisele and Adriana Lima, who love the full-body workout.
This calorie-burning, stress-relieving sport will burn fat, tone your body, give you confidence and keep your heart healthy. With all that running, skipping and sparring you’ll feel strong and ready to take on the world.
Great for: calorie burning, fat burning, losing weight, increased muscle tone, cardiovascular, confidence, stress relief, core, toning, heart, strength and power
You don’t have to be Spiderman to scale walls. Rock climbing is an exhilarating way to get fit and heighten your (spidey) senses by staying mentally strong and dexterous.
You’ll use most muscles in your body and will strengthen your core – it’s good for calorie burning, flexibility and stress relief and can be done inside or out.
Great for: muscle toning, cardio, strength, core, mental strength, flexibility, calorie burning, stress busting, mindfulness
As the name suggests, aerial yoga is yoga in the air, with the help of a fabric hammock, suspended from the ceiling, which supports your body while you do traditional and adapted yoga moves.
It’s a fun, stress-busting workout that will improve strength and flexibility and you get to hang upside down!
Great for: total body workout, flexibility, stress buster, strength, mood builder (releases endorphins), balance
Stand-up paddle boarding
Stand-up paddle boarding is a fast-growing sport and you can see why. It’s easy to do and has all the thrill of surfing once you’ve mastered it, or you can paddle on flat water for a more relaxed ride. It’s low impact, whilst using your whole body, and it has heaps of health benefits — both mental and physical.
Great for: full body workout, balance, stress buster, increased strength, cardio, low impact
Pole dancing isn’t just about getting your sexy on. It’s a fun way to get fit, tone up, lose weight and strengthen your core. You’ll burn calories quickly and it will help you to de-stress and the great thing is anyone can do it.
You don’t have to be super-fit or agile to try it — head along to a beginners class, spin round that pole and you’ll be fit and fabulous in no time.
Great for: weight loss, core, cardio, toning up, metabolism, flexibility, confidence, upper-body strength, balance
